Before anyone visits your website, they’ve already seen your Google Business Profile. It’s the first thing that appears when someone searches for your business or a service like yours in your area, and in many cases it’s the only thing they see before deciding whether to call you or the business next door.
What Google Business Profile is and why it matters so much
It’s the free listing Google shows on the map and in search results with your name, opening hours, phone number, reviews and photos. For businesses with a physical location or a local service area, it usually generates more calls and visits than the website itself — and unlike a website, it doesn’t need any technical development to work well.
The most common mistakes that cost you customers
- Wrong or overly generic category: if you do renovations and show up as a “general contractor”, you lose specific searches.
- Outdated opening hours: nothing puts a customer off more than arriving to find you closed when Google said you were open.
- No real photos: a listing with no photos, or generic ones, signals the business isn’t really active.
- Unanswered reviews: not replying — to good or bad reviews — reads as indifference.
- Empty or copied description: it’s your chance to say, in your own words, what sets you apart, and almost nobody uses it.
How to optimise your listing, step by step
- Verify your business if you haven’t already (Google sends you a code by post or phone).
- Choose the most specific primary category possible, and add secondary categories where relevant.
- Upload real, current photos: storefront, interior, team, products or finished work.
- Actively ask satisfied customers for reviews, right after completing the service.
- Reply to every review, within 48 hours if you can.
- Post updates or offers from your listing regularly: Google rewards recent activity.
